HERO IN THE FIGHT AGAINST RIVERSIDE

A way to remember Billy and all he did for others
Plans for a memorial to community hero Billy Lyon are being discussed by his friends.

Billy Lyon...extraordinary efforts

They  feel that the work he did for Carlisle tenants and leaseholders in their fight against Riverside Housing Association the city`s biggest landlord should be remembered  in a permanent way.

Carlisle Tenants` and Residents` Federation which publishes this blog, put the memorial idea forward and has been supported by Carlisle Riverside Action Group.

Billy was a Riverside leaseholder and a long-standing member of the Federation. It was his initiative that got the action group going with the  support of the Bishop of Carlisle (the Rt. Rev. James Newcome) and the active help of Canon Michael Manley, the Carlisle Cathedral Missioner.

A spokesman for the Federation said:” Billy struggled to get a fair deal from Riverside and he saw that others were struggling in the same way.  He made extraordinary efforts to help all those people .
“We  have not  yet decided on what form   the  memorial should take. It might possibly be an an annual award for  outstanding community work in the city”.

The spokesman added:We have spoken to Billy`s family and they are delighted that he should be remembered in  some way - they were proud of his work for tenants and leaseholders. They indicated this at his funeral service”
